The Ministry of Mass Media and Information which is located at 163, Kirulapone Avenue, Polhengoda, Colombo 05 is the Predominant institution that provides guidance, supervision and resources management in order to secure the Sri Lankan identity and national heritages in the modernized technological environment and to establish and maintain an ethical media practice in the Country while contributing directly towards the development of the country and preserving the right of the people to have access to correct information.
At present, 14 no. of Television Channels, 32 no. of Radio Channels and 23 no. of national newspapers owned by both state and private sector institutions are operated in Sri Lanka.
This Ministry executes its mission through the institutions such as Department of Government Information., Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, Department of Government Printing, State Printing Corporation, Selacine institute, Press Council, Sri Lanka Institute of Printing and Independent Television Network with the view to ensure the social responsibility and media freedom of those so called media, in this modernized technological environment which undergoes rapid development.
Our Objectives
» To facilitate the general public to gain an equitable and easy access to information.
» To promote an information society for the people to take informed decisions for
the upliftment of the quality of their lives.
» To take measures to minimize the negative effects of adverse advertising and
media Programmes.
» To introduce media ethics and related policies.
» To develop Television and Broadcasting infrastructure facilities.
» To take appropriate steps to create a responsible media culture.
» To set up an environment that can implement a media service aimed at the
development of the country through both state and private sector media institutions.
The Functions
» Drawing up a state media policy and the preparation of a code of ethics for all
Mass Media.
» Introduction of regulations relevant to the Acts of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting
Corporation and the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation.
» Training and Development of Media personnel.
» Restructuring media institutes.
» Issuing licenses for private television channels and broadcasting services.
» Supervision of the administrative and financial activities of the institutions under
the Ministry.
» Creating public awareness about the government's developmental activities through
various programmes in the state media.
» Implementing various training programme with special attention on the
training of staff.
» Procurement of goods and services for the Ministry.
When carrying out these functions the ministry obtains the fullest Cooperation of the following agencies which come under the purview of the ministry.
