The Mass Media and Information Ministry always assists media personnel to upgrade their knowledge since updated knowledge is a must to attain perfection in the field, Mass Media and Information minister Keheliya Rambukwella said.

The minister was addressing the ceremonial awarding of scholarships to journalists under the Media Scholarship program at the Mass Media and Information Ministry Auditorium yesterday.

Addressing the gathering, the minister said that the Asi Disi media scholarship program is carried out annually by the Mass Media and Information Ministry aiming to equip journalists with knowledge and experience to facilitate a system of ethical media reporting in accordance with the Mahinda Chinthana National development plan.

The government always stands for assisting media personnel to gather the latest knowledge in the field. In keeping with the Mahinda Chinthana, the government assists

media personnel to upgrade their knowledge. Moreover, the knowledge of media personnel should be upgraded and updated so as to be perfect media personnel , Minister rambukwella said.

Mass Media and Information Ministry SecretaryDr. Charitha Herath said the Asi Disi scholarship program is carried out with the objective of developing three sectors such as training, ethics and regulation. Accordingly, the project is to encourage and to provide opportunities for journalists to improve their professional skills through training programs to face the challenges of the 21st century.

Over 100 journalists serving in recognised electronic and print media institutions on full-time or part-time basis as well as freelance journalists, have been selected to award scholarships under this program. The journalists may select Post Graduate Courses, short and long term Certificate Courses and Diploma Courses conducted by local Universities and government higher education and training institutions under this scholarship scheme.

Payments for course fees will be made by the Mass Media and Information Ministry subject to a maximum of Rs. 100,000 on the basis of non-recovery under this annual scholarship program.

The ceremonial awarding of scholarships for the awardees selected for the year 2013/2014 under “Asi Disi’ Media Scholarship programme will be held on 17th July, 2014 at 1.00 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Ministry of Mass Media and Information under the patronage of Hon. Dr. Keheliya Rambukwella, Minister of Mass Media and Information and Mr. Charitha Herath, Secretary to the Ministry. This scholarship programme has been initiated with the intention of empowering all journalists with knowledge and experience in creating a developed media culture in keeping with the ‘Mahinda Chinthana’ National Integrated Development Plan.

Colombo University Journalism Unit Head Prof Ajantha Hapuarchchi will attend 'Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum 2014' from June 30 to July 2 in Bonn, Germany. More than 2,500 participants from 130 countries have confirmed participation in the forum. She has been invited to take part in this event as a main speaker by the Deutsche Welle media organiser and the Federal Foreign Office of Germany.

World Conference on Youth 2014 Sri Lanka will be of great significance to the world as it would pave the way to issue The Colombo Declaration 2015 which the United Nations would treat as the basic paper on youth of the world, former Sri Lanka Consul in Toronto Karu Paranavithana said.

He said the Colombo Declaration on Youth would turn out to be the Map on Development of Youth world over. “Hence, Sri Lanka is fortunate to have got this opportunity to hold the Conference on Youth -2014 Sri Lanka,” Paranavithana said.

Sri Lanka’s inflation falls to 2.8% in June - Central Bank

Sri Lanka’s inflation continues to remain in single digit for the 65th consecutive month at 2.8% in June, states the Central Bank. The rate decreased to 2.8% last month on yearon- year. It stood at 3.2% in May this year. “It is noteworthy to mention that inflation continues to remain in single digit level for the 65th consecutive month in June 2014,” the Central Bank said in a statement.
