altSri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Wednesday (29) visited the High Commission of India in Colombo to convey his condolences on the demise of the former President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

President Sirisena signed the Condolence Book and fondly recalled his meeting with Dr. Kalam last month in Colombo.

altForeign Ministry, Yesterday announced on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka a historic initiative to cover the entire country with affordable high-speed internet in partnership with Google.

Using high altitude balloons Google Loon will cover every inch of Sri Lanka with seamless access to the internet. Sri Lanka is now on its way to becoming the first country in the world to have universal internet coverage.

Accodingly, the Hon. Minister has handed over a checque to the value of Rs. 300,000 to the secretary Ministry of Mass Media.

altThe Elections Commissioner has emphasized that workers in the Private Sector should be granted leave to exercise their franchise without being deprived of their personal leave or pay at the upcoming elections.. Elections Chief Mahinda Deshapriya has intimated this notice issuing a special statement.He points out out that this regulation should be properly enforced at this general election based on the provisions mentioned in Clause 120 of Parliamentary Elections Act No: 01 of 1981.

National Identity cards a must for voting - Elections Commissioner.

altThose in need of their National Identity Cards (NICs) to vote at the forthcoming Parliamentary Elections 2015, should apply for their NICs on or before the 25th of this month.

Commissioner General of Registration Persons Department R.M.S. Sarath Kumara, has instructed in a circular, that all Divisional Secretaries and Grama Seva Niladharies countrywide, must educate their respective householders on this matter and encourage them to apply for their NICs as early as possible to ensure they obtain their NICs before August 17, the date of the General Election 2015.

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said that he had decided that it be compulsory for all voters to produce their NICs at polling centres to establish their identity and those who have no NICs may be given the ballot paper as malpractices could take place if election laws were to be relaxed.

altSecretary to the President P.B. Abeykoon in a special circular has informed that recruitment, appointments and promotions in the government service has been restricted and prohibited during the Parliamentary Election period. Also misuse of state assets too have been prohibited.

The Secretary to the President also has said that vehicles issued to the personal staff of Ministers, Deputy Ministers and State Ministers other than their private Secretaries should be handed over to the respective Ministry Secretary before July 20.

The President is on a four-day official visit to the People’s Republic of China.

from exposing massive corruption involved in transactions and the contracts
of the previous government. Many investigative journalists left the country

Right to Information as a fundamental right

 The government has planned to incorporate the Right to Information into the
Constitution to give it a legal recognition as a fundamental right.According to Media
and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry Secretary Karunaratne Paranavithana,the government
is planning to add a clause to Article 14 of the Constitution which ensures freedom
of speech,assembly and movement as a fundamental right. “Article 14 of the Constitution
will be amended to recognizethe right to information as a fundamental right,” he said.

The minister said this addressing representatives of provincial correspondents from 25 districts and their state media chiefs at a discussion held at his ministry on February 23.

The US had expressed its interest to invite President Maithripala Sirisena for an official visit to the US.

This was disclosed by Cabinet spokesman Minister Rajitha Senarathne at the weekly press briefing.

Sequel to the discussions held by Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera with State Department officials, Minister Senarathne indicated the likelihood of the President undertaking an official visit to the US during the latter part of this year.

General Election: 195,000 State Employees on Election Duty.

altThe Deputy Elections Commissioner MM Mohamed said that the Elections Secretariat will deploy 195,000 state employees for election duty.

Accordingly, 120,000 state employees will be deployed on the Election Day while 75,000 will be deployed for the counting process, he said.

The counting of votes will take place in 12,021 centres. Two representatives per candidate will be permitted at counting centres.

altThe maiden conference of heads of the National Statistical Organizations (SAARCSTAT) of the countries of South Asian region was held in Calcutta, India in 2005 with the view of enhancing regional cooperation on Statistical affaires.

It was successfully established and the main objectives of SAARCSTAT are to plan and undertake policy initiatives for comparable and timely statistics, harmonize classifications, concepts and definitions, adopt international good practices, promote improvement in official statistics, and promote human resource development. Last year the conference was held in Katmandu, Nepal and there Sri Lanka was nominated to host the conference for 2015.

Foreign Observers to Monitor August 17 General Election.

altThe Elections commission have invited foreign polls observes to observe the Parliamentary Elections scheduled for 17 August 2015, Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said.

Following an invitation from the Sri Lankan authorities, the 70 members of European Union who will be deployed for the forthcoming poll expected to arrive in Colombo in the coming days while the Chief Observer of the team is scheduled to arrive in the island on Monday (July 20).

Election Commissioner stated this yesterday (16) at a press conference held in the election office.

Election Commissioner said that they have already wrote to the Common wealth related to the activities of monitoring Election and a group between 6 to 10 observers would be from Common wealth soon.

30 observers of SAARC countries would also be engaged in monitoring activities at the general election which iscarried out directly by Elections Department, further added Election Commissioner.

 The Frontline Magazine has not been banned in Sri Lanka, but the Customs Department has stopped the release of bulk of the latest issue of the Magazine, Media Ministry Secretary Karunarathna Paranaithana told Daily News yesterday.

The Secretary said the Customs officials have done so due to a contempt material found in the magazine that would be detrimental to the national security.
