Toll rates on expressways reduced from today to April 25

Toll rates on expressways have been reduced from today to April 25 in view of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year season.

Highways Ports and Shipping Ministry sources yesterday announced that user fee rates for all vehicles plying on the Southern Expressway and Outer Circular Highway and Colombo-Katunayaka Expressway have been reduced with effect from midnight today on account of the New Year on the directions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Over 1.5 million visit Divi Neguma Avurudu fairs

The number of people making purchases at the Divi Neguma Avurudu fairs now being held in 324 main towns countrywide under the guidance of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa, is expected to reach three million. The Divi Neguma Development Department has organized the fairs with the assistance of 19 state organizations including the Trade and the Mahaweli Ministry.

Halt to sale of state resources spurred development - President

President Mahinda Rajapaksa said the government's decision to stop selling state resources helped develop the country.

He said the country's economy has improved owing to this policy of the government.

"We firmly believed that selling public resources will not solve problems in the country," he said.

The 64th Annual Report of the Monetary Board of Sri Lanka was submitted to the President and the Minister of Finance and Planning Mahinda Rajapaksa on Tuesday (8) by the Governor of the Central Bank Ajith Nivard Cabraal.

The Report stated that Sri Lanka's economy has rebounded recording 7.3 per cent growth in 2013 despite adverse international economic scenario.  while inflation remained at single digit levels for the fifth consecutive year.  With the steady rise in economic growth during the year, GDP per capita income has risen to US dollars 3,280 in 2013.

Vietnamese Minister of Public Security Prof. Gen Tran Dai Quang called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees yesterday (07) evening. He was on an official visit to Sri Lanka with a view to strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the areas of public security, law and order. 
Welcoming the visiting Minister, President Rajapaksa thanked the Government of Vietnam for its consistent support to Sri Lanka at international fora, especially during the recent session of the UN Human Rights Council. The President also recalled how the government and the people of Sri Lanka and he himself, since his student days, supported the heroic struggle of Vietnamese people against foreign domination. 
World Conference on Youth 2014 Colombo Declaration as basic paper on youth of the world

World Conference on Youth 2014 Sri Lanka will be of great significance to the world as it would pave the way to issue The Colombo Declaration 2015 which the United Nations would treat as the basic paper on youth of the world, former Sri Lanka Consul in Toronto Karu Paranavithana said.

He said the Colombo Declaration on Youth would turn out to be the Map on Development of Youth world over. “Hence, Sri Lanka is fortunate to have got this opportunity to hold the Conference on Youth -2014 Sri Lanka,” Paranavithana said.

Divi Neguma to open 324 Avurudu fairs

altThe Economic Development Ministry has made arrangements to have Avurudu fairs under the Divi Neguma program in the main towns of 324 Pradeshiya Divisions for the Sinhala-Hindu New Year season.

The fairs will be open to the public from Monday April 7 to Saturday April 12 from 9.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.

North and East shows phenomenal best results in last 30 years

Examination Department analytical report - 2013 shows that the best results at the GCE (O-L) examination in the North and East recorded in the last 30 years, were this year.

According to the statistics, out of the 15,720 students who sat the GCE (O-L) from the Northern Province in 2012, only 9,430 qualified to follow the GCE (A-L) while out of 15,280 students, 9,982 qualified to follow A-Ls in 2013 from the same province.

The national 'Aluth Sahal Mangalyaya 2014', the festival of offering the new rice harvest to the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi was held under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Anuradhapura last morning.

The Aluth Sahal Mangalyaya or 'new rice festival' is an important event of the harvest festival in Sri Lanka. The first batch of new rice after being plucked, threshed and winnowed is offered to The Buddha and deities.

Ministry takes over Trincomalee General Hospital administration

The Health Ministry took over the administration of the Trincomalee General Hospital on a request made by the Eastern Provincial Council, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, the Health Ministry has already taken over the running of several other provincial hospitals, such as, Nuwara Eliya, Polonnaruwa, Chilaw, Gampola, Hambantota and Kantale.

Pseudo programs to promote national unity using foreign funds are doomed to failure since Sri Lankans are already rich in humanitarian values, so much so that they are of the firm view that even animals should have the right to live on this earth, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

The President said Sri Lanka's own concept of Human Rights is far richer than the contemporary charters in relation to Human Rights and he believes that the country's endeavour to promote national unity should be based on this indigenous knowledge. The ideologies promoted by websites and channels that are against the country cannot help promote national unity, he said.

altSri Lanka won a record second cricket World Cup cricket title beating India by six wickets in the World T20 final played in Dhaka, in Bangladesh, at the Sher-e Bangla National Stadium yesterday.

It’s the second World Cup cricket title for Sri Lanka and the first in the Twenty20 version of the game.

Sri Lanka’s first World Cup success was 18 years ago when Arjuna Ranatunga’s team beat Australia by seven wickets in the ICC World Cup (50 overs) final played in Lahore, Pakistan on March 17, 1996.

A series of side events, parallel events and an exhibition have been facilitated at the BMICH premises alongside the ‘World Conference On Youth -2014’ from May 6-10, International Youth Task Force Co-Chair and National Youth Services Council Working Director Milinda Rajapaksha said.

President to inaugurate WCY in Hambantota on May 6

The World Conference on Youth (WCY) will be ceremoniously inaugurated at the Magam Ruhunupura International Convention Centre in Hambantota by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on May 6, Education Deputy Minister and Youth Affairs and Skills Development Monitoring MP Mohan Lal Grero said. Addressing a press conference at the Government Information Department yesterday, the Deputy Minister said this conference attended by approximately 1,500 participants would be a historical landmark as it would decide the future policies on the youth in the entire world.

April 15 declared holiday

The Government has declared Tuesday, April 15 a public holiday in lieu of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, states a Labour and Labour Relations Ministry release.

Accordingly, employers have been requested to grant a holiday for all employees in Government Corporations, Statutory Boards and the Private Sector on Tuesday, April 15, 2014. 


Singapore FM calls on countries to engage constructively with SL

Singaporean Foreign Affairs Minister and Minister for Law, K. Shanmugam during a meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa at President's Office yesterday, called on countries to engage constructively with Sri Lanka and look to the future rather than dwell on the past.

Minister Shanmugam said one of the main objectives of his visit is to "tell the world what the (Sri Lankan) people really need is development. What people are really interested in is their future and their children's future," he said.
