*Salaries of state sector servants increased by Rs.10,000; Rs. 5,000 will be given in February/ remaining Rs. 5000 in June- Thereby state sector employees’ salaries increased by 47%

Media men who fled country invited to return

 Media Minister and Government Chief Whip Gayantha Karunatilake said he would request journalists who fled the country in the past to save their lives from the oppression of the previous regime, to return home and engage in media activities by using their pen freely as before. He would guarantee that the media would not be harassed or oppressed under the tenure of the present government as before.

Former Dinamina Editor Saman Wagaarachchi, a veteran media personality has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL). He was one of the founder journalists of the Lakbima newspaper, and also a Deputy Editor and subsequently as Chief Editor of the same newspaper. He had also served as the Chief Editor of the Irida Peramuna weekely.

Kavan Ratnayake assumed office as Chairman \ Managing Director of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited this morning. 

He holds a BSc in Physics from the University of California Riverside and was Country General Manager for IBM

He later moved to Dialog Axiata  PLC as Chief Executive Officer and became the Chief Corporate Officer of Dialog in January 2010.

Active preparations are underway to launch the national anti-corruption programme, Media Minister and Government Chief Whip Gayantha Karunathilaka told the Daily News yesterday.

“Work is underway by the National Executive Council to ensure the implementation of government’s anti-corruption programme in keeping with President Maithripala Sirisena’s 100-day plan,” he said.

Well known journalist, author and state official Karunaratne Paranavithana has been appointed Mass Media and Information Ministry Secretary, by President Maithripala Sirisena.

Paranavithana served as the Director General of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, Director Editorial of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd. and the Chief Executive Officer of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation. He also served as Consular General of Sri Lanka in Canada.

Media and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry Secretary Karunaratne Paranavithana in a press release issued yesterday stated the ministry has drawn its attention to various news items published through various media institutions on the removal of Bandula Padmakumara from the Mulpituwa morning news review programme he presented over the Swarnavahini television channel.

Some of the news items published through these media programmes indirectly gave the impression that this has been done on an order from the top and engineered by the government.

He was a Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayawardenapura, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, a writer and a veteran media personality.

President due to leave for SAARC Summit today

President Mahinda Rajapaksa is due to leave for Kathmandu, Nepal today to attend the 18th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit scheduled for November 26 and 27.

Death of former Silumina Chief Editor Karunadasa Sooriaarachchi

Former Chief Editor of Silumina newspaper and veteran journalist Karunadasa Sooriaarachchi better known as Kasuri passed away at the Colombo National Hospital yesterday. Kasuri was serving as a Consultant Editor of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (Lake House). He started his career as a teacher and joined the Divaina newspaper of the Upali Newspapers Company and subsequently was appointed Deputy Editor of the Divaina. He also served as Chief Editor of Navaliya newspaper before joining Lake House as the Chief Editor of the Silumina newspaper.
