Indian journalists praise Lanka's development

Development programs like the ones launched in Sri Lanka were not found in any other country in the South Asian region. The island's rural population is reaping the full benefits of infrastructure development, states a group of Indian journalists visiting the country.

The visitors expressed confidence that Sri Lanka would be a fully developed country within the next decade. The journalists promised to brief the Indian people on the development programs Sri Lanka has undertaken regardless of ethnic and religious differences.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has hailed Chinese President Xi Jinping’s initiative of 21st Century Maritime Silk Route, saying the economic corridor bears significance to the island’s development. The President said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua at Temple Trees that his country will join China’s efforts in the Silk Route trade cooperation.The President said President Xi’ scheduled visit in Sri Lanka, which would be the first by a Chinese President over the past 28 years, is “important” for the  development of the bilateral ties.

A fire engine valued at nearly Rs. 10 million received by Jathika Namal Uyana Founder Ven. Wanawasi Rahula Thera as a donation from the Namal Uyana – Japan Friendship Foundation in Gumma Prefecture in Japan which was given over to the BMICH by Ven. Rahula Thera has been handed over to the Kandy Municipal Council for the use of its fire brigade. Here, the documents in relation to the donation being handed over by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa at a ceremony at President’s House, Kandy recently. Ven. Rahula Thera, Chief of Presidential Staff Gamini Senarath, BMICH Director General Bandula Ekanayake and other officials were also present.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday unveiled the plaque naming the road leading to the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, Premakeerthi de Alwis Mawatha after the late veteran broadcaster, lyricist and media personality. The Colombo Municipal Council through the intervention of the President decided to name the road after the late artiste, considering a request made by the Premakeerthi de Alwis Commemoration Committee. Upon arrival at the venue, President Rajapaksa was received by renowned vocalist Victor Ratnayake. The President also viewed the exhibition organised by the Committee tracing the career and life story of Premakeerthi de Alwis. Here Nirmala de Alwis, widow of Premakeerthi de Alwis presenting the first copy of the book Premakeethi authoured by her, as a biography of her husband.

Social conciliation is an aspect that should be present in every field, community and public service,” Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa said.

“It should be present at all levels.

“There should be village-to-village social conciliation, province-to -province conciliation and so on,” the minister said.

“Social conciliation should not be confined to making ethnic communities come together. It is an all -encompassing activity that should take place at all levels,” he said.

Over 2.7 million Divineguma beneficiaries will benefit from the Sahana Aruna credit scheme which is to be launched through the Divineguma community banks from September 1. This credit scheme will ensure credits for beneficiaries from Rs. 5,000 to a maximum Rs. 50,000 without guarantors at a low interest rate of four percent per annum.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa made an inspection tour of the construction site of the “Knowledge Park” at Pettah yesterday morning. The construction work is being carried out on the 25 acre land of the former Tripoli Market. The first phase of the construction has been completed covering a 12 acre area. The project was launched on the directives of Defence and Urban Development Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. The complete cost is estimated to be around 7 million US dollars. Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Defence and Urban Development Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Transport Ministry Secretary Dhammika Perera and Urban Development Authority Chairman Nimal Perera were also present on the occasion.

The Press office of the Holy See has announced the dates for the Holy Father Pope Francis 1’s, scheduled Apostolic trip to Sri Lanka. “Welcomimg the invitation from the Civil Authorities and of the Bishops, His Holiness Pope Francis will make an Apostolic voyage to Sri Lanka from January 12 to 15 and to the Philippines from January 15 to 19, 2015”, the official announcement stated.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, as the Chair in Office of the Commonwealth, has conveyed his warm greetings and wishes to the President of the Commonwealth Games Federation Prince Tunku Imran for the success of the 20th Commonwealth Games that got underway in Glasgow, Scotland yesterday.

"These Games are a unique feature in the Commonwealth calendar, bringing together athletes from across its regions into one arena," President Rajapaksa said in the message.
