Mr. Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena Was born in 1955 to an illustrious political family in the District of Matara situated in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka.
His Father held many a prominent leadership position at local and provincial level. The Abeywardena Family has been actively involved in the political Arena of the Southern Province of Sri Lanka for more than 40 years.
The prominence of the Abeywardena family in defining the political leadership fabric of the south of Sri Lanka has been growing rapidly over the past few years with Mr. Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena continuously been elected to the parliament of Sri Lanka in thirteen consecutive general elections. He was the Former Employment and Welfare Minister.
He was educated at Mahinda Collage in Galle, a college renowned for producing some of Sri Lanka's most astute political leaders.
Mr. Abeywardena is married and has three sons. Two of them are in overseas, United Kingdom and Australia. The eldest son is studying in United Kingdom. The youngest is a student of Royal College in Colombo.
Mr. Abeywardena entered the political arena in 1973 when he became a member of the United National Party (UNP) of Sri Lanka. When he joined the UNP in 1973 it was in the opposition.
Having entered the Southern Provincial Council, he worked tirelessly to serve the people of South. He was instrumental in providing assistance and initiating many a social welfare schemes for the benefit of the people.
Mr. Abeywardena was a proponent of various micro level development programs that enabled the people to improve their quality of life. He is the Chairman of the Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena Foundation.
